NRW is one of Germany's leading film and TV centres. Nine TV and ten radio stations can be found in Cologne, for example WDR and RTL that started the era of private TV 25 years ago. Additionally Cologne establishes itself as a location for the booming gaming industry.
Since June 2009 the »LARA«, the German Games Award, is assigned in Cologne and in November 2008, the World Cyber Games finale was held in the Koelnmesse. This event paved the ground for Europe's leading software, gaming and computer trade fair, the gamescom, which opened its doors in July 2009 for the first time in Cologne.
Region of film festivals
No other region in Germany offers a wider variety of film festivals: Silent films can be seen at the »Bonner Sommerkino«, thrillers, horror and science fiction at the »Fantasy-Filmfest«, short films at the festival »Kurz und Schön« (»Short and sweet«) or the famous »International Short Film Days« in Oberhausen. Video art is shown at the »International Video Festival Bochum« and documentaries at the »Film Week Duisburg«. In fact in NRW every film taste is served extensively.
