Film- und Medienstiftung NRW

Schtonk

»Schtonk!« (1991)

Film- und Medienstiftung NRW (Film and Media Foundation NRW) - formerly known as Filmstiftung - has emerged from its teenage years with major achievements behind it: more than 1,524 projects have been funded since 1991 to the tune of around half a billion euros. With the help of the Foundation, NRW has become a »Media Region« in the best sense of the term. Today the funding institution‘s work extends way beyond the film industry – for instance the Foundation will in future also support the region‘s game developers.

It all began with »Schtonk!« – but just before the premiere of the first project funded by Filmstiftung NRW disaster threatened: the newspaper Express sued the film‘s makers Helmut Dietl and Ulrich Limmer. The fictitious news magazine »Expressmagazin« whose sensation-seeking editors fall for the line of the forger Fritz Knobel (played by Uwe Ochsenknecht) had to be struck out of the film. The director and the producer Ulrich Limmer write film history by making the first ever use of digital effects to touch up the magazine‘s title.
More than two million cinema visitors and an Oscar nomination confirm the decision by the Foundation to fund this work.

Petra Mueller

»Filmstiftung NRW will in future take on a new role. We will attend more to communication for the film and media region of NRW. Location marketing in the digital age will extend the focus beyond film and television and will open up to the new media, internet, games and mobiles.«

Petra Müller,
CEO of Film- und Medienstiftung NRW

Talents for the State

Since the early days of the Foundation support for the State‘s cinemas have been part of its infrastructure funding. The first annual film programme awards were already presented in the founding year of 1991 to 29 cinemas in NRW. To date the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW has presented 942 cinema programme awards to the tune of 7.5 million euros and 12 million euros were allocated to modernise a total of 375 cinemas.

Film- und Medienstiftung NRW accompanied the launch of both the film college Filmschule Köln and the media art college Kölner Kunsthochschule für Medien.
With its own funding programmes, initiatives with WDR and support for the audio visual media centre AV-Gründerzentrums NRW, the Foundation assists talents and provides incentives to keep them in the State.

Location Marketing

In the coming years the Foundation will be directing its attention, alongside its core business, more to a convergence of the various media sectors. This also includes start-up funding for the development of computer games, innovative web content and cross-media projects. Furthermore the Foundation is handling the location marketing and intends to unify presentation of the NRW media landscape. Petra Müller, Director of Filmstiftung NRW in Düsseldorf since September 2010, is forging ahead with the new venture.
