Grading

From Joseph Vilsmaier‘s »Nanga Parbat« and the digital restoration of the Fassbinder classic »I Only Want You to Love Me« through to the post-production of Stereo-3D projects such as »Animals United« and the Wim Wenders installation for the Architecture Biennale – CinePostproduction stands out not only by virtue of trendsetting digital film workflows, but also by the fact that it has established cutting edge know-how for digital productions.

The company, which is represented throughout Germany, offers complete post-production services for sound and picture in a unique production environment at the film lot of Geiselgasteig. The colour grading suite with a size of 140 square metres and a seven metre wide screen, sound mixing studios using state-of-the-art digital mixers and a reference screening room are located next to each other, as well as AVID editing desks of the latest generation. They enable directors, cinematographers and editors to concentrated work in comfortable conditions, and they facilitate the parallel editing of picture and sound under very tight deadlines.
The best possible production environment also includes the on-set support for digital productions. DITs (Digital Image Technicians) give their advice before and during filming. On set the production team can decide directly and without any time lag on the quality of shots, thus avoiding expensive retakes. This saves time and money – from the very beginning the close collaboration between the film crew and the posthouse is promoted so that requirements and budget can be more flexibly dealt with.

Tailored Stereo-3D Workflow

In the Stereo 3D area the spotlight is on tailored workflow and extensive research and development. For this purpose CinePostproduction has, for example, developed a procedure which makes it easy for the editor to switch between stereo and planar view. He can focus on creative editing – thanks to the reduced technical complexity.
High quality in stereoscopy is only possible, if the entire chain of dimensions on set through to the projection situation in cinema is taken into account. The influence of the screen size has been intensively researched at CinePostproduction and the requirements were considered accordingly in construction of the 3D cinema grading suite Studio C. A similar one will be opened in Berlin this autumn. The colour correction suites with Barco digital cinema projectors enable to perform colour grading that by far surpasses the requirements of the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative).
CinePostproduction does not only edit the most digital intermediates in Germany, but, as a beta tester, has major influence on the continuing development of the systems of manufacturers such as Autodesk.
Over the past few years, the company has invested between 3 and 4 million euros nationwide per year in digital post-production and sound studios.

Cinema Technology for TV Productions

For TV films on 16 mm CinePostproduction has already been offering so-called »1.9K log« workflow for the past 3 years. The film material is scanned logarithmically in HD resolution. The colour space and other creative facilities for cinema grading are therefore also available for TV films and series, which is unique in Europe. For regular HDTV operations de-graining plays an important part. At CinePostproduction a special software has been blended in existing workflows so that de-graining can be performed and verified directly during colour grading.
CinePostproduction combines decades of experience in the film lab with state-of-the-art technologies of digital lab post-production and sound.
