The nationwide broadcasting stations, Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur, are amongst the main media in Germany and can be favourably compared with the information and cultural stations of the English BBC or Radio France. Both stations, free of advertising, belong to Deutschlandradio - the national broadcasting station found in all 16 states. Its aim, through the cross state perspective of its programmes, is to make a contribution to the unity of Germany and it is also present everywhere as a top class cultural factor, for example as concert organiser. With a spoken word share of 80 per cent, Deutschlandfunk, produced in Cologne, is the number one service orientated information station in Germany. Deutschlandradio Kultur is the nationwide cultural station.
Despite increasingly limited reception possi-bilities in some federal states in which the programmes of Deutschlandradio can only be received area-wide on medium wave, long wave, satellite or cable, Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur still reach a third of the country’s listeners - more than 8 million regular listeners.
