The capital remains in the lead — the merger of two media companies, various new broadcasters as well as pilot projects for future technologies, ensure plenty of activity in the television capital of Berlin.

»Premiere is possibly only the first victim«, comments Hans Hege, director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Institute, on the granting of the live transmission rights for the coming Federal Football League to arena, the subsidiary of the cable operator Unity Media. Competition on the TV market is becoming ever keener: telecommunications suppliers are transmitting television, cable operators are making programmes themselves.

If there’s a shortage of parking spaces in Babelsberg then it could be to do with the fact that the new Sat1 telenovela »Schmetterlinge im Bauch« (Butterflies in the stomach) is, since summer 2006, being produced in a new studio in the Babelsberg Park Studio.

The biggest film set in Europe has been created only a few kilometres from Berlin on an area of 1,000 sqm using 15 tons of plaster, as much concrete as well as 200 sqm stone and sand imitate and five kilometres of squared timber. The result of all this building is a lifelike depiction of the excavation site of Troy.

When a new mobile phone contract is signed in Kreuzberg, sometimes called by Berliners Little Istanbul, it is highly probable that this will be done with the new E-plus brand Ay Yildiz. For with this system the user can make telephone calls for 29 cents round the clock, not only in German but also in Turkish mobile radio and fixed networks.

Berlin‘s leading position as the capital of the »tele-novel«, and in the areas of print media, the IT sector, advertising and the music business .

Every film and television producer is aware of unforeseen disasters, major or minor, which may occur during the filming of a TV series, a television film, a Saturday evening show or an advertising spot.

Each film or TV producer knows the situation: the lead actor breaks his leg only a few days before filming ends, the negatives are damaged on their way to the lab or a short circuit causes a fire in the studio. The list of such incidents could go on.

Of the many events in the music, media and entertainment electronics industries, it is especially the International Consumer Electronics Trade Fair (IFA), the Popkomm and the Berlinale which stand out.

The sixth Media Week retains the concept of the previous year and combines various gold caret edia industry events which are taking place simultaneously in Berlin-Brandenburg under one roof. The international meeting point of the media industry at the start of the season after the summer break will be opened by Berlin’s acting mayor Klaus Wowereit; the Chancellor Angela Merkel has also promised to attend the big opening gala.
